Head Coach: Tommy Cox (102-94-1)
1998 Record: 3-8 (3-2 in district)
Playoffs: Lost to Bryan in Bi-District 6-0
Lettermans lost: (13) LB/FB Allan McIntyre, OT Daniel Escarcega, C/DE Ben Haney, RB Jason Howard, C Roman Pichardo, QB Omarr Guerrero, DB Hector Servantes, K/P Jeff Krempin, DB Nathan Smith, G Jon Barter, OL Eric Heimann, WR Eric Gregg, TE James Niemie, TE Justin Drummond, and LB K.D. Mitchell
Returning starters: (12) RB Alexis Cooper, FB Chad Wiley, DE Justin Reed, DB Adam Roche, DL Brian Diedrich, C Sergio Sanchez, LB Aaron White, QB Jon Montgmery, FB/LB Torey Fleming, LB Jared Moss, OL Asa Kenny, and TE Travis Cox.
Outlook: Last season the Bulldogs felt life after RB Victor Ike. The Dawgs average only 230.5 in offense per game and failed to score an offensive touchdown in 5 of their 11 games. Despite the poor offensive showing and only three victories, Bowie proved it to the world that they can play without Ike and made its way into the state playoffs for the seventh time in its 11-year history. In 1999, the Dawgs' playoffs hopes are in the hands of RB Alexis Cooper. Cooper, a third year letterman, is just one of eigth starters that have started since their sohpomore year.
Cooper gained 1,270 yards in having an all-district season. Joining Cooper in the backfield is FB Chad Wiley. The poor offense showing from the '98 season was due the lack of experience at quaterback. When QB Omarr Guerrero went down with a career knee injury, QBs Jason McPhaul and Jon Montgomery failed to produce as his replacement. The defense was the spark in last year's playoff game against Bryan. DB Adam Roche (6'1" 190) led the Dawgs in tackles last season and will be joined by the same defensive unit of DE Justin Reed (6'1", 250), DL Brian Diedrich (6'1" 290), LB Aaron White, and LB Jared Moss . C Sergio Sanchez has all district potential and will be converting from the DL. RB/LB Torey Fleming, who wears Ike's #22, is a solid player on both sides of the ball.
Strength: Experience. Bowie has alwalys been a run oriented offense and the tandem of Cooper, Wiley, and Fleming should be the showcase once again this season. The 8 three year starting seniors should lead the Dawgs to their second consecutive playoff season if they stay healthy enough to beat Crockett.
Weakness: Positioning. The talent is there but in the wrong places. Last season, Coach Cox should have given more playing time to the all state backfield of FB Allan McIntyre and RB Jason Howard. FB Wiley is a weak FB and plays better on defense, while DLs Reed and Sanchez is slow and effectivless on the DL and should have been move to the OL. C Ben Haney was a terrorizing defensive end player. The QB position is pathethic. McPhaul is the slowest person on the team and Montgomery is slow and is afraid of running the option to blow is knee once again. Garrett Cox was a terrible passer but atleast took advantage of the option in'97. These two QBs don't have talent. Another weakness is Bowie's playbook. They have been running the same plays, which contains 4 plays, since their first season. In a game against Round Rock, the Dragons defense were calling the plays at the line. Dawgs defensive also never adapted to to special offenses. Bowie used the same defensive scheme against against all the teams. They should have play a containment instead of persuit against the one man Westwood team of O.J. McClintock, a pass prevention against New Braunfels and Westlake.
