Head Coach:Jim Loerwald (48-61-1)
1998 Record: 4-6 (1-4 in district)
Playoffs: Never made the playoffs
Lettermans lost: (24) RB Calvin Waites, QB Jay Seiver, K Brandon Greer, DB Dustin Woodul, RB Kole Ray, DB Shan Sivalanigham, DL Anthony Butler, DB Matt Kuhen, LB Greg Clark, DB Nick Otregan, DB Josh Mayes, OL Luke Bednarek, DB Daniel Wilcox, OL Bryan Chambers, OL Kyle Madsen, OL Thomas Honeicutt, OL Eric Mentzer, DL Greg Wetter, DL Tijoan Parramore, DL Don Isbel, WR Chris Pate, DB Brad Dahl, TE Clayton Woods, DL Phillip Jackson
Returning starters: (8) DB Patrick Dendy, WR Brian Bulte, DE Kolter McKenzie, OT Kevin Coco, OG Andrew Cayson, DB Matt Lucas, OG Jonathan Spillman, RB Seth Yantis
Outlook: The McNeil Mavericks starting the '98 campaign 3-1 but then choke and lost five of their last six games. However, of the six losses, four of them were within a touchdown or a field goal to win. They hung tough with Hays (L 15-12), Bastrop (L 30-28), Bryan (L 20-14), Roun Rock (L 13-10), and Westwood (L 21-11). The Mavs return seven defensive starters from the fifth ranked defense in the super CenTex. DB Patrick Dendy is a top speedster who can cover and has help from another capable speedster in DB Matt Lucas. DE Kolter McKenzie has quick feet and will help the Mav defense maintain their CenTex best 50 yards pass per game. On offense the Mavs must replace QB Jay Siever and speedy RB Calvin Waites. At quaterback, is a concern since QBs Matt Sternad and Eric Hafner are very inexperience and played poorly in last year. Sternad is the man but he failed to stayed in the game against the scrubs from Austin High. Hafner is the younger brother of former McNeil star quarterback Marcus Hafner. If RBs Seth Yantis, Paul Grey, and Arthur Jackson can't provide a running game, the Mavs can rely on deep ball threat Brian Bulte. He caught 30 passes for 585 yards and 4 TDs. The offensive line should give Sternad breathing room with the tag team tandem of OT Kevin Coco and G Andrew Cayson.
Strength: The Mavericks hav tremendous speed in many different positions. The offensive lineman, wide recievers, defensive backs, lineman, and running backs are in tack and can break away at any point. If the Mavs are to make the playoffs this season, it will be up to how well the quarterback plays and if the defense can play without graduation stars DB Brad Dahl and DL Phillip Jackson.
Weakness: Quaterback is a concern. Sternad and Hafner must emerge as quarterbacks. Yantis, Jackson, and Grey must replace Waites' running game.
