Who: WESTLAKE CHAPARRALS at AUSTIN HIGH MAROONS
When/Where: 7:30 p.m. at House Park
Records: Chaps 5-0, Maroons 2-3
Against Common Opponents in 1999: None
Preview: The Chaps don't break a sweat ever in district. The have the next three weeks against AISD teams that they have never lost to. The Maroons have been blown consistently throughout this rivalry. Don't expect things to change. The #1 rated offense in central Texas is led by the #1 passer in central Texas. QB Alvin Cowan has 936 yards and 8 TDs in leading a productive offense. The Chaps ground game churns up 183 yards of 374 yards the Chaps average. Westlake doesn't have a top 10 rusher this season. Brendan Dewan and Scott Ballew have been good enough to give the Chaps the victory. Austin High meanwhile will have to deal with being the worst offense. The are last in offense by averaging a mere 164 yards. The Maroons goofed up last week and had an opportunity to upset Cove. They lost despite the inury to Vontez Duff 17-7. Westlake meanwhile had great playing from DB Erik Smart who picked off two Waco passes in the end zone to seal the victory for Westlake. Last year, the Chaparrals won 63-7 in Westlake.
Who: BOWIE BULLDOGS at CROCKETT COUGARS
When/Where: 7:30 p.m. at Burger Center
Records: Bulldogs 1-4, Cougars 2-3
Series: Bulldogs lead 9-2
Against Common Opponents in 1999: Bowie lost to Westwood 22-12, Crockett lost to Westwood 35-27
Preview: The south Austin rivalry is another meaningful game again this year. The winner of this game basically goes to the playoffs while the other begins to think about basketball season in six weeks. Crockett hopes to end a personal 7 game losing streak to Bowie. They have the homecoming crowd to support them this year. Bowie has dominated each and every game by executing their plays. In 1996, Bowie didn't attempt a pass in their homecoming by winning 45-17. In 1997 the immaculate catch by Rico Trevino will never be forgotten while in 1998 Bowie basically had the offense, defense, and special teams playing well for the 24-20 win. Crockett has basically shot themselves in foot every year. Crockett is led by 3 year letterman QB Cameron Slown. RBs Vincent Roland and Raphael Sterns need to boost an offense that averages only 277.4 yards a game. Crockett as always brings in a hard nose defense that averages 213 yards a game. The Cougars might get the break the need to end the streak as Bowie's offense averages 237 yards a game. Their main threat running is the marijuana infested Alexis Cooper. He has gained 507 yards and 3 TDs this season but failed to reach even 70 yards rushing in the last two games. Both teams were blanked last Saturday at Northeast Stadium in San Antonio.
Who: NEW BRAUNFELS UNICORNS at SEGUIN MATADORS
When/Where: 7:30 p.m. at Matador Stadium
Records: Unicorns 3-2, Matadors 2-3
Against Common Opponents in 1999: New Braunfels lost to Roosevelt 28-7, Seguin lost to Roosevelt 28-7
Preview: For the next three weeks, the Unicorns need to prepare for a district battle against Westlake. Offense is the not the problem. They just have the worst rated defense in central Texas. Ranked 18th, they give up 334 yards a game. Things are looking on the bright side as Seguin only gains 250.6 yards a game despite 11 TDs from RB Boomer Jones. Matadors QB Craig has a 2-1 INT ratio in favor of interceptions. That's good news for DB Tate Taylor who had an INT in last week's win over Churchill. He recorded 27 tackles. On offense, WR Eric Sultimeirer caught 4 passes for 150 yards last week. The key thing is, he scored everytime he caught it. QB Andy Schmid (867 yards, 10 TDs) threw it to him 4 times in leading the Unicorns to a double overtime win. Last year, New Braunfels won easily 23-7.
Who: WESTWOOD WARRIORS at GEORGETOWN EAGLES
When/Where: 7:30 p.m. at Eagle Field
Records: Warriors 4-1, Eagles 1-4
Against Common Opponents in 1999: Westwood lost to Copperas Cove 42-7, Georgetown lost to Copperas Cove 20-16
Preview: Westwood is 4-1, Georgetown is 1-4. Who would have thought that? Georgetown's running game is quite the same without Jomo Rose. RB Brandon Williams is 3rd in central Texas with 594 yards and 4 TDs. However he is behind Warriors tailback Will Matthews (656 yards 5 TDs). With the help of RB Ryan Long (388 yards, 11 TDs) the Warriors productive offense racks up 298 yards. Westwood can run their Wing-T offense and option game to perfection against a weak Eagle defense that gives up 323.2 yards. Westwood's defense meanwhile chopped down from 300 yards to 242.8 in the past two weeks against week defenses of Austin High and Killeen. Westwood is out to avenge last season's 33-29 loss.
Who: PFLUGERVILLE PANTHERS at ROUND ROCK DRAGONS
When/Where: 7:30 p.m. at Dragon Stadium
Records: Panthers 2-3, Dragons 1-4
Against Common Opponents in 1999: Pflugerville beat Bowie 21-2, Round Rock beat Bowie 14-6
Preview: Round Rock has dropped four in a row since opening the season with a win over Bowie. Pflugerville hasn't won since they beat Bowie. The Dragons have played tough teams all year and haven't been productive in any of their game despite great passing from QB Cris Love (640 yards, 5 TDs, 1 INT). WR Jon Peoples, brother of former UT baseball player Danny Peoples, is the #1 receiver with 31 catches. However he has only 309 yards. Round Rock's offense gains only 222.4 yards a game, only better than Bryan and Austin High. The Panthers can utilize their running game to cease the victory. RB Anthony Krieg has 520 yards & 4 TDs and RB Sean Petty adds a compliment with his ability to break. The Panthers can control the game with their defense that forces turnovers and gives up a respectable 283 yards a game. Last week, they were torn apart with by Leander's Matt Davis for 225 yards and 4 TDs. The on and off offense should be coming back in this game. Round Rock averages one TD per game, excluding the 28 points against San Marcos. Belton handed them a blow last week, winning 21-0.
Who: McNEIL MAVERICKS at BRYAN VIKINGS
When/Where: 7:30 p.m. at Viking Field
Records: Mavericks 4-1, Vikings 2-3
Against Common Opponents in 1998: None
Preview: District plays begin and McNeil must prove pre-season wasn't a fluke. So does Bryan. McNeil is coming off a homecoming blowout of Bastrop 44-12 while Bryan is coming off a homecoming loss. McNeil averages just less than 300 yards a game while surrendering only 211 yards. This game should be a low scoring one as Bryan gives up 244.4 yards a game and averaging only 221.2 yards, only better than the measly Maroons from Austin High. The Mavs ground game has been outdone by the passing of QB Jimmy Eiderman (442 yards, 5 TDs). His favorite target of course is WR Brian Bulte (23-488 yards). RB Kyle Rogers lead the rushing with 375 yards. Last year, Bryan stumped McNeil 20-14.
Who: LEANDER LIONS at COPPERAS COVE BULLDOGS
When/Where: 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium
Records: Lions 4-1, Bulldogs 5-0
Against Common Opponents in 1998: None
Preview: If it weren't for an injury to Vontez Duff, Leander wouldn't stand a chance in this game. Things change and that's why they play the game. If Austin and Georgetown can hold Cove's offense to a combined 37 points total, then Leander can win this game. RB Matt Davis is having a career season with 723 yards and 11 TDs. Last week, he scored 4 TDs and rushed for 225 yards in stomping Pflugerville at homecoming. QB Paul Thompson, a sophomore, is having a quite season for them leading Leander to a 4-1 start. The defense is the giving up 251 yards a game. These guys need to play better than last year's 30-14 loss to the Bulldogs. The Lions offense is 3rd in central Texas, behind #1 Westlake and behind Copperas Cove who averages 350.8 yards. Duff has 524 yards and has been slowed by injuries. Cove does have other options and are underrated. Nathaniel Foreman has thrown for 559 yards and 7 TDs. WR Jason Mathenia looks to add to his 26-444 yards this season. This game is a good test for the #2 defense against the #3 offense. Cove gives up 202.8 yards.
Who: KILLEEN KANGAROOS at ELLISON EAGLES
When/Where: 7:30 p.m. at Leo Buckley Stadium
Records: Kangaroos 2-3, Eagles 1-4

Preview: The two basement dwellers get a break with district opening up. Last week, Ellison finally won a game by defeating Cooper 30-15. Killeen meanwhile got beat by Westwood for the second year in a row 38-0. Ellison offense finally broke through last week and actually scored more than 20 points after demolishing teams last year. The Eagles offense has an average of only 251 yards. While their defense gives up 319, third worst. Killeen can use their speed to there advantage to improve a low 245 yards of offense. Their defense gives up a low 238 yards. The 'Roos run behind RB Nick Sessions (473 yards). Nobody on either team has 20 or more points. Last year Ellison won easily as the visitors at Leo Buckley.
Who: TEMPLE WILDCATS at WACO LIONS
When/Where: 7:30 p.m. at Lion Stadium
Records: Wildcats 3-2, Lions 3-2
Against Common Opponents in 1998: None
Preview: Temple has dropped two in a row since beginning 3-0. The offense gains just under 300 yards while the defense gives up a respectable 283. Last week, Judson gave them a hard one winning 21-9. Waco meanwhile lost a heartbreaker to Westlake, 14-6. The #1 defense proved themselves they were worthy of being #1 by holding the Chaps to 14 points. The offense meanwhile needs to wake up. Without RB DeMarcus Cater, the Lions offense only gains 269.2 yards. QB Akers has 554 yards passing, 6 TDs, 3 INTs. His favorite target is WR Alexander who has 11 catches for 150 yards. Last year, Waco won in Temple.
Who: STONY POINT TIGERS at CEDAR PARK TIMBERWOLVES
When/Where: 7:30 p.m. at A.C. Bible Jr. Memorial Stadium
Records: Tigers 4-1, Timberwovles 5-0
Against Common Opponents in 1998: None
Preview: It's homecoming week in Cedar Park. Or newcoming as they call it. It's the expansion bowl with Stony Point bringing in a brand new squad. The T'Wolves look to wallop the Tigers with their sound running game behind RB Quinton Smith. QB Michael Swoda has the ability to throw when needed. The Wolves already blew out another first year team against Lago Vista 61-0. Cedar Park is coming off another shutout win at home over Jarrell 21-0. John McMillian is one of many defensive stars on the squad. As for Stony Point, they have a lot of speed and could contest for the first two quarters.
